This was an interesting article, certainly more intense than my experience but then I started when I was 12, not even teenager so maybe that is why. None the less, I like the attitude he came away with. I try to take that attitude but sometimes do not succeed.

If you have pretty much any Debian derived version of Linux AND have it up to date, then both the meltdown and spectre exploits have already been addressed. The very first distribution to fully address them was Ubuntu and it is generally the leader at getting security exploits fixed.

This reminds me of a story. When I was in high school I was one of two students per school selected to participate in a Nuclear Industry Tour / Propaganda event. We were originally going to tour the Hanford N Reactor, this was before it shut down, and I was very interested since this reactor, like Chernobyl, had a graphite moderator with all the fire hazard issues it implies. But last minute the DOD nixed the tour so we went and toured Trojan nuclear reactor in Rainier Oregon instead. Now after the tour there was a big gathering in an auditorium where the industry first put on a presentation and then asked for questions. There were approximately 10,000 students there from all over the country. One curious bit that interested me was that Trojan was designed as a 1200 Mw plant but was operating at a 900 Mw power level. If you are at all familiar with the economics of nukes then the obvious question is why would you operate a 1200 Mw plant at a watt below it's design level. I asked this question and the industry was actually honest with the answer. They told me and 10,000 others, the reason we operate Trojan at 900 Mw level is because we have neutron flux instabilities in that plant that we do not understand and so we operate at a lower power level to provide a safety margin. "Neutron Flux Instabilities" translates into, "The reaction rate randomly changes and we don't understand why. If it takes a sudden increase and exceeds the cooling capacity of the plant the whole thing could melt down or have a steam explosion so we operate at lower power levels to provide a safety margin."
